Judging a book by it's cover?

Everyone knows the saying "Don't judge a book by it's cover." I try my hardest not to just look at the cover. I want to look at the synopsis, the title, author, you know everything about the book. But sometimes I just see the cover and I am like I need to read that!

Some covers are pretty wrappings with a pretty package inside. Some Examples:

All of these covers are beautiful! I have read Angelfire and Falling Under and the cover is perfect for the book. And form what I heard the cover for The Unbecoming of Mara Dyer is just right.

Some covers have me laughing and shaking my head. An example:

This cover can fool anyone! It looks kind of childish, right? Wrong! Do NOT let a kid read this book. The cover is funny, but misleading.

Some covers just don't interest me. Some examples:

I really do not like these covers. I think they are just kind of boring and outdated. But I was fooled here! Speak was actually a really good book, despite the cover.

Let me set on thing straight: I do judge books by their cover. I can't help it! If it's pretty I will most likely get it. I love adding pretty books to my shelf :D

Do you judge books by their cover? Have you ever been mislead?

  1. The cover for Mara Dyer is quite possibly my fav. cover ever. I am guilty of setting a book aside based on the cover- although it's usually a combo of cover and not being sold on the blurb. I was totally turned off by the cover to Speak, although, after reading it, I "get" it, but yeah, not the prettiest. Another cover I didn't love, The Mockingbirds. I don't like cartoony type things, I'm just not drawn to them. Still, I bought the book because of the blurb and hype around it.

  2. I always judge a book by it's cover and it just makes it even better when the book is really good and the cover is nice to look at! I would never have read Divergent if I didn't read so many raving reviews about it because I just don't like the cover. Now that I've read it, the cover is fitting but it's just not appealing to the eye. Great post!

  3. I know that judging book by its cover is wrong. I try not to do it, but sometimes it is really difficult. When some book has really creepy cover, I have no desire to read it.
I think I have been mislead when I pre-ordered book Tris & Izzie. Just look at that cover and say that you don´t want it in your bookshelf! :D But the reviews of this book are horrible. Predominant 2 stars reviews. By the way, haven´t you read that book by yourself?

  4. I almost always judge a book by it's cover, I usually pick up a book by its spine or cover. I have read Speak, it was really good. I just didn't like the cover :] && I'm usually right about a book when I judge it by it's cover. But there are times when I just refuse to read a book because the cover is just so outdated and old.

  5. I was mislead when it came to the cover of Tris & Izzie. It is a truly amazing and beautiful cover. It made me think the story would be the same...but I was so so wrong. It was light and sometimes just really cheesy. Not something you would expect from a book with that stunning of a cover.
And then the opposite happened with Vampire Academy. Hate the covers. I almost didn't pick them up because of it. But when I did I felt so silly because they are amazing books. Now it's one of my all time favorite series.

But, even though I have been fooled more then once by covers (whether it be a bad cover/good story or vice versa), I can't help being a cover judger.

Revealing Eden by Victoria Foyt

When I read Dystopian books, I either love them or hate them. Most of the time I just can not connect with the characters, and sometimes it's the setting. But with Revealing Eden I was completely captivated with the world Victoria created.

Steel by Carrie Vaughn

Time travel and pirates. These are two words that I love to hear! I have always love time travel, and pirates have always interested me. So finding this book was like finding a buried treasure! ( why yes, that was super cheesy, but I couldn't resist!) In fact a book I am writing now has to do with time travel. :D hehe!

The Queen of Kentucky by Alecia Witaker

The Queen of Kentucky is a book that I, as a Kentucky native myself, could relate to. Being able to relate to the characters and the surroundings really made me enjoy this book. The Queen of Kentucky is one of those books that has such a great message.

Under the Never Sky by Veronica Rossi

As soon as I got this book I tore into it! I could not wait to read it! And once I started Under the Never Sky it never let my hand. :) This is by far one of my favorite dystopian novels that I have read this year! Veronica really surprised me with her debut! Think of Under the Never Sky as awesome as Angelfire, and if you know me at all then you know that this novel blew my socks off! it!
